OUR PUBLICATIONS

Under the guidance of Br. Ram Maharaj, the first Adhyaksha after Swami Turiyananda, Ramakrishna Kutir began its journey into publishing.

The first book brought out from the Ashrama was Rama Gita—a Hindi translation of the original Sanskrit by Sri Chinmaya Chaitanya—published in 1937. This was likely the very first publication from the Almora Ashrama.
In 1953, Laghu Vakya Vritti, translated from Sanskrit into English by Swami Aparnananda, was published and is still in circulation from Advaita Ashrama.

This was followed by an insightful booklet titled Swami Vivekananda’s Three Visits to Almora, authored by Padmashri Gertrude Emerson Sen.

Swami Vivekananda's Three Visits to Almora
This expanded edition of Gertrude Emerson Sen’s work traces Swami Vivekananda’s three historic visits to Almora in 1890, 1897, and 1898—first as a wandering monk, then after his triumph in the West, and finally to train his disciples. With vivid descriptions of every place sanctified by his presence, the book brings alive unforgettable moments: his profound realization under the peepal at Kakrighat, meditation at Kasar Devi, his first Hindi lecture at GIC, the grand reception of 1897, and the intimate blessing he gave Sister Nivedita beneath a deodar tree. Through these pages, the reader can see Almora as Swamiji saw it.

In August 1890 Swami Vivekananda along with Swami Akhandananda meditated under the Ashwattha tree near Shiva Temple at Kakrighat near Almora. He had a revelation that the microcosm and macrocosm were built on the same plan. The original Peepul Tree popularly known as Jnanan Vriksha had completely dried up by mid-2014. A cloned sapling from the same tree had been planted here on the same spot on 15 July 2016. This place is approximately 20 km away from Ramakrishna Kutir, Almora.
This book recounts the significance of Swami Vivekananda’s realization under the Jnana Vriksha and the efforts to resurrect the tree through cloning.

The original Bengali edition, published in 2016 during the Ashrama’s centenary, documented this sacred history for the first time.
To reach a wider audience, the work has been translated and expanded into English and Hindi (2025) with rare old photographs, brief biographies of the founders, and a chronicle of developments at the Kutir in recent years.

TURIYANANDA DIVYASMRITI
For over a century, Ramakrishna Kutir has preserved the personal belongings of Swami Turiyananda—cherished reminders of the sacred days he spent in Almora. Recently, additional rare artefacts, including clothing of Swami Subodhananda, were discovered.
With INTACH’s assistance, these items were restored, and a small museum was created to ensure their preservation and sacred viewing.
This book presents a brief introduction to the Turiyananda Divyasmriti Museum, along with photographs and descriptions of the conserved articles. Download here
