BOOKS ON SWAMI VIVEKANANDA'S ASSOCIATION WITH ALMORA

Swami Vivekananda's Three Visits to Almora

This expanded edition of Gertrude Emerson Sen’s work traces Swami Vivekananda’s three historic visits to Almora in 1890, 1897, and 1898—first as a wandering monk, then after his triumph in the West, and finally to train his disciples. With vivid descriptions of every place sanctified by his presence, the book brings alive unforgettable moments: his profound realization under the peepal at Kakrighat, meditation at Kasar Devi, his first Hindi lecture at GIC, the grand reception of 1897, and the intimate blessing he gave Sister Nivedita beneath a deodar tree. Through these pages, the reader can see Almora as Swamiji saw it.

Resurrection of Jnanavriksha

In August 1890 Swami Vivekananda along with Swami Akhandananda meditated under the Ashwattha tree near Shiva Temple at Kakrighat near Almora. He had a revelation that the microcosm and macrocosm were built on the same plan. The original Peepul Tree popularly known as Jnanan Vriksha had completely dried up by mid-2014. A cloned sapling from the same tree had been planted here on the same spot on 15 July 2016. This place is approximately 20 km away from Ramakrishna Kutir, Almora.

This book recounts the significance of Swami Vivekananda’s realization under the Jnana Vriksha and the efforts to resurrect the tree through cloning.
